Outliers – Who to Follow – Why is it called Rose Petal Press?

Rose-Petal-Press-LogoLet me answer the first question you are thinking, “What is Rose Petal Press?” Well, that’s the name of the publishing division of mc2.

(I really dislike how the hyperlink doesn’t work well with exponents–it doesn’t look quite right–but that’s the price of having an exponent in your organizational name and brand.)

The purpose of this column, Outliers, and the purpose of this imprint are very similar.

Simply stated, it’s my desire to use Rose Petal Press, the publishing division of Mathematical Christian Consulting, to publish and distribute content that inspires, informs, and invests…that truly multiplies leaders–the kind of books that when read, will help us use our talents wisely, and be blessed for reading these materials.  One example is Moonwalker, by Charlie Duke. Another, more recent, example is You Can Be a Test Pilot. Both are books that I think help to accomplish this goal.

That brings us to the name, Rose Petal Press…why is it so called?

My only daughter’s name is Emily Rose.  I think you can connect the dots.

I love my only daughter dearly.  I long for her to be an outlier, a person of influence, a person that you should follow.

I don’t think that we need to wait for that to happen.  I think that if she does not begin to exhibit the characteristics of a leader today, then I have failed.

Emily follows me.

She follows me even when I don’t know it. I’ve been place in a position of influence in her life.  Someday, I will have to give an account of how I have used that opportunity.

It’s my job to follow up–I have to be involved in her life, listen to her, watch her. It’s my job to see what kind of influence I am having.

My children are not on facebook or twitter. If they were, I would follow them.  But it’s more important to connect with them in real life.  But I do believe we can use technology to show our affection and to honor them, by naming a publishing division after them or writing a book for them, for example.

How do you think we can use technology to leave a legacy for our children?
