I’ve always been fascinated by co-called variable-cycle engine like the J-85, a turbo-ramjet, which powers the SR-71. At high speed combustion is done by the velocity of the incoming air. Another engine that’s interesting is GE’s YF-120. The engine adjusts the by-pass ratio for super cruise. It power the YF-22 and YF-23.

I just read the other day that “variable bypass ratio” engines are going to get even more focus from the military and NASA as an area rich for research and development.
